RN Nursing Programs in Ohio - OH
In Ohio, Registered Nurses are in high demand. They are the largest group of health care professionals in the state and they make $65,000 per year on average (according to BLS.gov) —a pretty good wage for someone with two years of college under their belt. Being a Registered Nurse is not an easy task, however. Rather, RNs in Ohio often work irregular hours are hold a great deal of responsibility—their actions directly influence the lives of dozens of people on a daily basis, from managing patient care assistants to making difficult decisions and caring for people need. However, the need for more Registered Nurses will only increase in coming years, given the current shortage of RNs and an aging population. With a good salary and excellent long-term job prospects, becoming a Registered Nurse in Ohio is surely an appealing choice.
The fastest route to licensure as an RN in Ohio is via a two-year Associate Degree, Nursing program (ADN). ADN programs exist throughout the state and take two years. However, they usually require general admission to a college or university beforehand and only allow one to apply to the nursing department after completing prerequisite courses. Prerequisites take two semesters—typically ten courses—and consist of studying both the sciences and arts—topics such as biology, chemistry, psychology, math, and English. Grades in these courses often determine acceptance into a nursing program and although the bare minimum is usually around a C average, applicants with higher grades tend to get selected over those who do the bare minimum.
ADN programs require students to take classes in general studies such as physiology, microbiology, communication, math and English as well as the core courses focusing on nursing. Beyond procedural nuts and bolts, nursing courses cover broad theoretical topics and mental health as well, from theory of clinical practice to emotional support. With a broad range of topics, ADN programs ensure students leave with the knowledge and skills required to successfully pass the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). To take the examination, students must first apply to the Ohio Board of Nursing and provide evidence of successful completion of a state approved RN program or equivalent within the US, as well as submit to a criminal background check and fingerprinting—it is important to note that one must not have a criminal record to become an RN in Ohio. Aside from NCLEX fees, the Ohio Board of Nursing charges a $110 examination fee and $110 endorsement fee upon application for examination and places successful applicants on the their registry, at which time RNs are eligible to work in the state.
RNs who complete a two-year ADN work as entry-level nurses everywhere from public health settings to clinics and nursing homes, but the main employer of nurses is hospitals, where over half of all nurses nationwide find a job. Regardless of the setting, critical thinking in preparing and administering patient care plans is required of an RN. Additionally, they must advise and supervise lesser skilled nurses such as Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing assistants. RNs may also work under the supervision of physicians in emergency rooms, operating rooms and beyond. Certainly, a Registered Nurse in Ohio must possess a diverse skill set, which can be applied to many different settings. But there is another path to an RN that provides greater opportunity for specialization: a Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BSN), a degree held by 50 percent of RNs in Ohio.
In Ohio, a BSN can be achieved via several paths: after an LPN, after an ADN, or following initial acceptance into a nursing program. A BSN is a four year degree in which the first two years are very similar to an ADN, with the final two years focusing on advanced skills and theories as well as specialized topics such as maternity, caring for children, caring for mental illnesses, health in the community, leadership in a health care setting, research and more. Furthermore, an important part of a BSN is the practicum, whereby students learn through experience as they move through the program.
Essentially, students in a BSN in Ohio study specialized topics and take their critical thinking to the next level, preparing them for a leadership role in a health care setting. They leave the program not only prepared for the NCLEX-RN and work as a RN, but also with critical thinking skills, research experience, and exposure to an array of specialized knowledge that can open doors towards a chosen career path. Indeed, a BSN provides further opportunity for choice when entering the workforce—one thing to consider when choosing between an ADN and a BSN.
