How to Become an LPN in Wyoming
There are 30 credit hours of prerequisites before applying to an LPN program in Wyoming, in both science and liberal arts courses. Only after they are complete can one apply to a college of nursing. Not all programs have the same entrance requirements, so it is important to select a school where you have a reasonable chance of getting into the school of nursing.
The fastest route to licensure is through a diploma program, but one can take the National Counsel Licensing Examination-Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) after the first year of an Associate Degree, Nursing, or a targeted LPN program as well. In addition to a $200 examination fee charged by national administrators Pearson Vue, the Wyoming State Board of Nursing charges a $130 application fee and $60 for criminal background check and fingerprinting.
Wyoming LPN Salary, Hours and Duties
Sixty percent of Licensed Practical Nurses in Wyoming work in hospitals, with the rest finding jobs in nursing homes, physician’s office, and other institutions. Their average salary in the state is $38,500 (according to BLS.gov), with some LPNs earning upwards of $50,000 per year plus benefits.
Typical tasks for Wyoming LPNs involve direct patient care, giving medicine, feeding, bathing, collecting samples, maintaining equipment and so forth. It is usually a 40 hour work week, although schedules may vary and include nights, split shifts and so forth. While not perfect for everyone, it can be good for nurses who have other obligations like family and school.
