An important part of RN to BSN programs in Ohio is a flexible schedule—with the option for online study, an RN to BSN allows nurses to continue to work as they further their education, with the option to do so at a rapid pace; it is possible to complete an RN to BSN in just a year. This accelerated pace is made possible through NLN Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exams, which test knowledge in nursing processes and skills, medical and surgical processes and knowledge, pediatrics, mental health and maternal newborn care, and place currently working nurses for accelerated education. Basically, they evaluate the current knowledge and skills of an RN in order to allow them to move to higher level courses based on previously acquired knowledge in both the workplace and previous education. This allows currently employed Registered Nurses to adapt specific curriculum to their individual needs and desires.

A GPA of 2.5 in prerequisite and prior nursing courses is typically required to enter an RN to BSN program in Ohio. However, as entry is competitive, this is not always enough to gain acceptance. Prerequisites should be largely fulfilled by previous studies during an AND—classes like English, math, and statistics, and elective courses in the following areas: humanities, communications, lab science and social/behavioral sciences. Once prerequisites are completed and admission to both general studies in the university and the nursing program is achieved, students take courses in research, leadership, family and community health, community assessment and upper level electives running the gamut from bioterrorism to non-nursing courses in any number of fields allow for further specialization of knowledge.

All nursing courses and electives must be completed with program minimum grades—never less than a C—a student is eligible to graduate with a BSN and pursue a wider variety of career opportunities; new skills in areas such as research, legal studies and education—as they relate to nursing and beyond—open doors in both the public and private sector. A wider variety of jobs become available, and a nurse’s earning power increases.
