CNA Nurse Training

CNA training classes are widely available at CNA nursing schools nationwide. CNA training programs are offered everywhere from universities and community colleges to community centers, hospitals, nursing homes, American Red Cross facilities, and even dedicated online CNA schools.

Typical CNA training classes are split between classroom study and hands-on clinical training. While requirements for CNA training vary from state to state, the federally established minimum is 75 hours of training to take the certified nursing assistant test and register on the CNA registry. However, in some states, the requirements can be up to 160 hours of training—consult or state pages for specifics.

When choosing schools for certified nurse training, there are several factors to consider. First and foremost, make sure the school is certified by the state in which it operates. Secondly, it is important that the CNA school of nursing is preferred by facilities in the area you wish to work. In some cases this may mean training directly at the facility, because many facilities which hire CNA's also offering CNA training. Lastly, different CNA school programs offer different time frames and payment schedules—it is worth shopping around for one that fits your schedule and budget.

Another important factor in pursuing CNA training is to consult your local Medicaid providers to see if they afford reimbursement. In most states, it is possible to have most, if not all of your CNA school program paid for by a facility if they hire you before, during, or within twelve months after graduation and successful completion of the CNA exam. Your CNA school should be able to provide this information—if they are unsure of whether reimbursement is available, it may be better to look elsewhere or talk to your local branch of the American Red Cross.

With such a variety of CNA schools and CNA training classes, choosing a CNA program that is right for you should be a priority. Ensure that the training program meets your needs in terms of time and budget, and that the CNA training you choose is well connected to ensure employment once you finish your CNA program.
